Information for BYOD Classrooms

The individual use of mobile devices is a way to empower students to maximize their full potential and to prepare them for college and the workplace. The result is increased learning from the continuous dynamic interaction among students, educators, parents, and the extended community. Technology immersion does not diminish the role of the teacher. On the contrary, it transforms the teacher from a director of learning to a facilitator of learning, which may continue beyond the school day.

The following guidelines apply to all mobile computing devices used at Lomond View Elementary.

Taking Care of Your Device

Each computing device is intended for use at school every day. Students are responsible to bring their device to all classes unless specifically instructed not to do so by a teacher.

General Precautions

Charge the device’s battery every night to ensure a full charge for school.

Insert cords and cables carefully to prevent damage.

Never leave the device unsupervised or in an unlocked area or vehicle.

Report devices that are broken or fail to work properly to the teacher for evaluation.

Computing devices should only be used in a place where the temperature is between 32⁰ and 95⁰F. Low or high temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to stop working properly.

Don’t leave the device in a car in order to avoid extreme temperatures and chance of theft.

Discharge the battery of your device completely once per month.

Carrying the Devices

The protective case for your device should have sufficient padding to protect the device from normal treatment and provide a suitable means for carrying it within the school.

Always keep the protective case on the device when carrying it.

Avoid placing the device where it will have pressure and weight on it.

Screen Care

The screens on any device can be damaged if subject to rough treatment. They are particularly sensitive to pressure on the screen.

Do not lean on the top of the device.

Use only a soft, dry, clean cloth to clean the screen. Never use cleansers of any kind. Do not use paper towels.

Do not place anything on or near the device that could put pressure on the screen.

Do not place anything in in your backpack with the device that could press on the screen or cover.

Do not bump the device against hard areas such as walls, car doors, floors, or other hard areas as it will eventually break the screen.

Screensavers and Background Photos

You may personalize your device through copyright –free background photos or screensavers.

Do not use images of weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, drugs, or gang-related symbols as a background photo or screensaver.

Do not password-protect your screensaver or background.

Home Internet Access

Parents are responsible for monitoring the student’s use of the device while accessing the Internet at home.

Saving Files

Students may save work online in a Google Drive account space or in Evernote if their device has access. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure work is not lost due to failure or accidental deletion. A hardware malfunction is not an acceptable excuse for late or un-submitted work.

Software

The software or applications required by the school must remain on the device in usable condition and be easily accessible at all times. Occasionally the school may require the addition of software or applications for use in the classroom.

Synchronizing

 Students are not allowed to synchronize (sync) personal devices to a school computer.

  • I will obey my teacher’s rules regarding the use of my device in class.
  • I will store my device on my desk during the day.
  • I will surrender my device to the teacher if I use it inappropriately at any time during school or on school property.
  • I will never leave my device unattended, and I know that my teacher will take appropriate precautions to secure the room when my device is there.
  • I will never loan out my device to other individuals.
  • I will know where my device is at all times.
  • I will charge my device’s battery daily to ensure that it is ready to use.
  • I will protect the screen from scratches.
  • I will keep food and liquids away from all devices (my own and others) in class since they may cause damage.
  • I will not disassemble or try to repair any part of my device or attempt any repairs possibly voiding the warranty.
  • I will protect my device by storing it in a suitable case.
  • I understand that my device is subject to inspection at any time without notice.
  • I will follow the Weber School District Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and the Mobile Computing Device Guidelines.
  • I will immediately report to my teacher any case of theft, vandalism, or other acts by individuals that may damage my device.
  • I will be responsible for all damage or loss caused by neglect or abuse.
  • I will not sync a school computer to my device.
  • I will not borrow a device from anyone else.
  • I will not damage, vandalize, or steal another person’s device.
  • I will not take my device outside during recess breaks.
